Ever wanted to take a piece of Kendal Calling home with you? A memento for all of the happy memories gained in the fields? We are pleased to announce the Ten Thousand Daffodils charity fundraising project. It is set in the beautiful gardens of Lowther Castle on the Lowther Estate, where we are lucky enough every year for a weekend to run Kendal Calling.
A striking and highly imaginative ceramic installation, Ten Thousand Daffodils takes its inspiration from Wordsworth’s poem and features a carpet of 10,000 ceramic daffodils displayed in the gardens of Lowther Castle. At the end of the installation, all the daffodils will be sold to the public and the money raised will go to six designated charities – Another Way, Sunbeams Music Trust, Ullswater Catchment Management CIC and Friends of The Ullswater Way, all local; the New Horizon Youth Centre and James’ Place, both national. It is hoped that around £300,000 will be shared among them. The event is based on the hugely successful Poppies at the Tower of London, which likewise raised an impressive sum for charity.
Mastermind of the project, Ullswater Way based potter Helen Ratcliffe explains: “All the charities are focused on creating better futures for the planet and us. Friends of the Ullswater Way, Another Way and Ullswater Catchment Management CIC are local charities working towards positively impacting the environment. Sunbeams is a delightful music therapy charity” Helen goes on to say, “also based in the nearby Ullswater Valley; New Horizon focuses on helping young homeless people find a home; and finally James’ Place was nominated by the Lowther family as it is a charity that helps young men in suicidal crisis.” The strong emphasis on the environment mirrors Lowther’s nature-friendly farming strategy which has been put in place to encourage natural processes to return, carbon capture to improve and wildlife to flourish. The estate’s wilding efforts are particularly focused on the medieval Deer Park, the site of Kendal Calling.“
In its preparations for the installation, the Ten Thousand Daffodils team has received a huge amount of help, with over 500 people having come forward to help out with the project. These volunteers have ranged from locals to people from the other side of the globe! “Their smiling faces and endless energy on the darkest and chilliest winter days have spurred us on. Many of our volunteers already benefit from the services of our beneficiary charities and so connections are deep,” Helen says.
When we asked Helen which song best describes the campaign, she answered “With a Little Help from My Friends by The Beatles”. The title alone sums up what this project has been all about: People coming together, giving their time to achieve something incredibly special.” Much the same as our festival in the fields each year. “In addition Ten Thousand Daffodils has not only created a piece of art but also is facilitating the work and growth of smaller, lesser-known deserving charities.”
Helen adds: “The daffodil is celebrated as a symbol of the coming of spring and with it hope of brighter days ahead.” Not only does the event echo the brighter, more exciting days of Kendal Calling but we also find it fits with the overall message of Kendal Calling, people coming together, forming new friendships in the fields, and providing a space for new relationships to flourish!
Yes, Kendal Calling wouldn’t be the same without it’s household name headliners or the late night raves but it’s not just about the music, there is plenty of different stuff to see and do across site!
PEEP SHOW QUIZ WITH BIG MAD ANDY
Having toured up and down the UK, Big Mad Andy from the cult classic Channel 4 sitcom ‘Peep Show’ brings the ultimate quiz about the escapades of Mark and Jeremy to it’s first ever festival! We did ask Danny Dyer’s Chocolate Homunculus to play but sadly they were unavailable…
JAACKMAATE’S HAPPY HOUR PODCAST LIVE!
One of the most popular, and funniest, podcasts in the country is joining us in the fields this Summer! JaackMaate, Stevie White and Robbie Knox are venturing out across the UK at the moment, selling out theatres all over the place and this July, they’re bringing it to the Lake District! Their twice weekly episodes have become a highlight of our week and this is sure to be a highlight of our festival weekend too.

Making it’s debut last year, Tim Burgess’ twitter phenomenon took to the diner of dreams for the very first time! Who would you like to see take to The Listening Party this year?

Join us for a deep dive into the history of some of the most recognisable album covers of all time.
Eat A Sitdown Full English
While this may sound incredible mundane – and in many ways – it is, there is a small novelty around having a sit down meal at a festival. Never before has that small novelty been as appreciated as a Saturday morning after a skin full the night before! In the Village Green, you’ll find our very own greasy spoon where you can get the works for breakfast each morning!
Now, how about we add in some Comedy and Cinema? Stay tuned over the next couple weeks!
Each year, Kendal Calling embraces the weird and wonderful with our fancy dress theme and this year is no different! Previous years have seen us travel back in time to the Jurassic period and even out of this world and into space! This year, we step inside the time machine once more as we travel back to 1967 and The Summer of Love! Think flower power, peace and love and all things groovy!
‘The Summer of Love’ will forever be instilled as a historical moment not just for the festivities taking place in San Francisco, but for defining fashion and culture during the period! Florals, peace signs, flared jeans, and decor adorned with brightly coloured tie dyes, there’s something about this period in time that captivates you in its free-loving optimism! It’s for this reason that we are bringing the late 60’s hippie movement to the Lakes this Summer!
Now, we know you all love to dress up and this year our fancy dress day will be SUNDAY instead of the usual Saturday. The twilight parade will return, you’ll have your chance to get involved with our very own placard workshop on-site.
Not sure what to wear? Our team have compiled a list of items or inspiration you can take with you, so that you can look like you’ve just stepped out of the swinging 60s:
Hair
Throw out your brush and throw in some wild flowers! The Summer of Love was all about being as at one with earth as possible and hairstyles were no exception. Beachy waves, messy pixie cuts and decorated beards were all the rage! We’ve found a selection of theme inspired items to help your hair get that summer of love flare.
A time where double denim was encouraged! Get ready for flares on fringes, vests on shawls and crochet everywhere! The Summer of Love fashion sense was immaculately groovy. Whether you’re emulating the fashion of the time or indeed dressing up as a member of The Beatles, anything goes in order to get into the swing of the 60s!
Glitter, peace signs, and bold necklaces everywhere! No Summer of Love look is complete without the accessories! Anything was game, you want to decorate a top hat with floral? Go for it! Wear a peace sign on your head? Love that! Have as much fun as possible, you can’t go wrong!
We’ve a weekend of classic festival moments, with core memories to be made in the fields this year! While this list could’ve easily gone into the hundreds, we managed to narrow down to 15 songs we can’t wait to hear at Kendal Calling 2023…
15 songs we can’t wait to hear at kendal calling 2023!
1. Kasabian – Fire
The definitive Kasabian anthem, with that slow burn start before whipping the crowd up into a frenzy. I can practically see myself dancing on the edge of the mosh pit before it breaks into that iconic chorus.
2. Blossoms – Your Girlfriend
Ring the cowbell! Blossoms have a back catalogue most bands would envy but this standout classic from their second album is what we’re most looking forward to. Lifting the lyrics from an online help forum while the melody takes a leaf out of Talking Heads book, this is sure to be a fun-filled moment of their Saturday night headline set.
3. Royal Blood – Figure It Out
Well, we always like to see the weekend out with a bang and Royal Blood will do just that! Their seminal debut album has gone down in the record books as one of the biggest ever and this defining riff-fuelled anthem is sure to get us dancing one last time before the weekend winds to a close.
4. Nile Rodgers & CHIC – Let’s Dance
The master hitmaker himself is not short of a few familiar tunes, with his writing credits reading like a who’s who of the biggest bands from the last century however his work with David Bowie is up there with his finest collaborations. We can’t wait to welcome them back to Lowther, but even more so, we can’t wait for this absolute banger!
5. Kaiser Chiefs – I Predict A Riot
Not short of a few hits themselves, we’re set to welcome back 2015 headliners Kaiser Chiefs to the magical fields of Lowther Deer Park this Summer! While we’re absolutely buzzing to hear ‘ Ruby’, ‘The Angry Mob’ and ‘Never Miss A Beat’ – it’s their breakout hit that will be providing the carnage on Sunday evening.
6. Rick Astley – Never Gonna Give You Up
Do we need to say anything on this? What a moment it will be when an entire field of festival goers gets the ultimate Rick Roll as the legend himself brings the 80s fun to a sunny Saturday evening. Fully ready to bring out all the dad dancing for this one.
7. Example – Kickstarts
There is something about this early teens hit that just emits pure joy – maybe it’s nostalgia or maybe it’s just the fact it’s a stone cold banger! Either way, we’ll be bouncing around down the Main Stage that’s for sure!
8. Frank Turner – Recovery
I’m almost certain you’ll be able to hear this stage from a mile away as Frank Turner takes over Parklands – it’s sure to be a set full of singalongs! As a long-time friend of the festival, it’s always a joy to have Frank back, and we can’t wait to hear some of his newer songs but it’s this jaunty classic from Tape Deck Heart which will always put a smile on our faces.
9. Circa Waves – T Shirt Weather
It’s as if someone set out to write a song that perfectly encapsulates that festival feeling! Circa Waves have gone from new band on the block to veterans of the circuit and having a had a few goes round to hone their craft – a headline slot on Calling Out awaits…
10. Natalie Imbruglia – Torn
I thought I saw a man brought to life… From start to finish, we know you know every single word to this one! All the way from Australia, Natalie Imbruglia is heading to the Lakes and bringing this top notch 00s classic with her.
11. Confidence Man – Boyfriend
The most infectious act around, Con Man bring the party to the Lakes this Summer! I would challenge anyone to watch this act and not walk away with a smile on their face, and a groove in their step. While they may be best known for their Ibiza fuelled radio hit ‘Holiday’ – it’s their debut single we’re most looking forward to – GET DOWN!
12. The Enemy – We’ll Live And Die in These Towns
The Coventry lads are back! After a few years away, they have emerged once more and are back tearing up the UK scene as if they never left. They’ve got indie bangers in abundance but we’re most looking forward to the chimes of this absolute anthem from their first record.
13. Melanie C – Spice Up Your Life
We can’t believe we’ve got a Spice Girl coming to Kendal! An absolute dream for us to hear some of these tunes played in the fields – while I’m sure she’ll have a few up her sleeve, few will have us waving our arms about and losing our voices quite like ‘Spice Up Your Life’’
14. Scouting For Girls – This Ain’t A Love Song
From the 90s to the 00s – Scouting For Girls are back at Kendal Calling this year! After a rapturous response, we just knew we had to bring these lot back for another round. Expect a set full of their greatest hits however it’s this number one from 2010 that always has us singing along…
15. Happy Mondays – Step On
You’re twisting my melon man! There’s no better way to start your Saturday than with the Madchester heavyweights, Happy Mondays! That iconic piano riff will be setting the tone for a party filled Saturday on the Main Stage.
